The award is presented to an active lodging operator member who has taken part in community activities or has made a contribution, personally or in the name of the industry, to their community. Bob Smith of Sebasco Harbor Resort presented the award to Burns, citing her long standing commitment to both the Association and the community, and her innovative thinking in creating a simple way for Maine Innkeepers to support the Maine chapters of Habitat for Humanity. In 2004 Burns suggested a new program, ‘Hospitality for Habitat’ be adopted by the Maine Innkeepers Association. She suggested that participating Innkeepers cut their room rates by 50% in the month of May for any guest who would donate $35 per stay to Habitat for Humanity. The new program, designed to help deserving Maine families build homes, was well received by both Innkeepers and the traveling public. ‘Hospitality for Habitat’ and has grown every year since inception raising $3000 in 2004, $4000 in 2005, and over $13,000 in 2008.
