Kristina Quirion was awarded the Larry Mahaney scholarship for $500 by the Holiday Inn in Waterville, part of Olympia Hotels, who sponsored the award. Working as an assistant restaurant manager in the Waterville area, Kristina says she would, someday, like to open her own restaurant. The scholarship program, created in 1984 to inspire and support Maine students pursuing careers in hospitality, has awarded over $125,000 to 219 students. “Tourism offers Maine students a wide variety of career opportunities, and continues to be the economic driver for the state,” said Greg Dugal. “We are pleased to support this vital industry with scholarships that provide inspiration and partial support to these fine local students pursuing careers in hospitality.” Any Maine resident who has been accepted to a fully accredited school with specialties in hotel administration or culinary sciences, such as Beal College or Southern Maine Technical College, and is pursuing a career in hospitality may apply for a scholarship award ranging from $500 to $2000. Non-Hospitality Scholarship awards may be made to member’s employees or their children, or children of member innkeepers. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee. Awards are made based on scholarship merit, employment history, financial need, extra curricular activities and desire to work in hospitality.
