Freeport, ME –July 17, 2010…..Joshua Charest of Lewiston was awarded the Harold Nelson & Irving Small scholarship by The Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association (MEIA) at the annual Tees & Textbooks Scholarship dinner at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine on June 21, 2010, announced Greg Dugal, Executive Director of MEIA.
Joshua Charest is attending Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where he is studying engineering. An outdoor enthusiast and very accomplished biker, Charest hopes eventually to become an astronaut. He is accustomed to heights having biked to the top of Mount Washington.
The $500 scholarship awarded to Charest is named for Harold Nelson & Irving Small, founders of a New England wholesale distributing company, and was sponsored by Nelson & Small Inc.
This year the Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation awarded 11 students sponsored scholarships in the amount of $9200. 230 students have been awarded over $134,000 since the scholarship program was created in 1984 to inspire and support Maine students pursuing careers in hospitality. Awards may also be made to member’s employees, or their children, or children of member innkeepers.
“We are pleased to offer scholarships to these extra ordinary students as they complete their education,” stated Dugal. “Whether it is a career in hospitality or another field we are delighted to offer encouragement to these fine students, and hope they will find good jobs at home in Maine.”
Any Maine resident who has been accepted to a fully accredited school with specialties in hotel administration or culinary sciences, and is pursuing a career in hospitality may apply for a scholarship award ranging from $500 to $2500. Non-Hospitality Scholarship awards may be made to member’s employees or their children, or children of member innkeepers. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee. Awards are made based on scholarship merit, employment history, financial
need, extracurricular activities and desire to work in hospitality. For more information on the Education Foundation please call the Maine Innkeepers Association at 207-865-6100 or email email@example.com.
