Freeport, ME –July 16, 2010…..Belinda Place of Morrill was presented with the Larry Mahaney scholarship by The Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association (MEIA) at the annual Tees & Textbooks Scholarship dinner at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine on June 21, 2010, announced Greg Dugal, Executive Director of MEIA.
Belinda Place is currently attending Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. Place has expressed the desire to work in hospitality since she was child. She was inspired by her aunt who owns and operates Macannamac Camps in Northern Maine. Place is studying Hotel Management at Thomas College and hopes to be a hotel manager in the future.
The $500 scholarship was named for Larry Mahaney, founder of the Erin Corporation, and generous supporter of the University of Maine system, and sponsored by the Holiday Inn in Waterville.
This year the Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation awarded 11 students sponsored scholarships in the amount of $9200. 230 students have been awarded over $134,000 since the scholarship program was created in 1984 to inspire and support Maine students pursuing careers in hospitality.
“We are pleased to be able to offer scholarships to these local students to help support their pursuit of careers in hospitality,” said Dugal. “Tourism continues to be the largest industry in

the state and offering educational support to the next generation is vital. Hospitality generates a broad spectrum of good career options in the state, and we hope some of these fine students find a great career right here at home.”
Any Maine resident who has been accepted to a fully accredited school with specialties in hotel
administration or culinary sciences, and is pursuing a career in hospitality may apply for a scholarship award ranging from $500 to $2500. Non-Hospitality Scholarship awards may be made to member’s employees or their children, or children of member innkeepers. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee. Awards are made based on scholarship merit, employment history, financial need, extra curricular activities and desire to work in hospitality.
