Haley Warner of Northport Wins Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation Charles Samelson Award
11 Maine students Awarded Scholarships at Maine Innkeepers Association Tees & Textbooks Annual Event at Samoset Resort
Freeport, ME –July 16, 2010…..Haley Warner of Northport was awarded the Charles Samelson scholarship by The Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association (MEIA) at a Scholarship dinner at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine on June 21, 2010.
Warner is attending Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, FL where she is working towards a degree in nursing. She grew up in a hospitality environment as the child of innkeepers, who were members of the Maine Innkeepers Association, and owners of the popular Dos Amigos Restaurant in Northport.
The $1000 scholarship awarded to Warner is named for Charles Samelson, a supplier of home furnishings to the hospitality industry, and sponsored by Dirigo Stitching and Harry Samelson.
This year the Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation awarded 11 students sponsored scholarships in the amount of $9200. 230 students have been awarded over $134,000 since the scholarship program was created in 1984 to inspire and support Maine students pursuing careers in hospitality. Awards may also be made to member’s employees, or their children, or children of member innkeepers.
“We are pleased to offer scholarships to the children of members of the hospitality industry as they complete their education,” stated Dugal. “Whether it is a career in hospitality or another field we are delighted to offer encouragement to these extra ordinary students, and hope they will find good jobs at home in Maine.”
Any Maine resident who has been accepted to a fully accredited school with specialties in hotel administration or culinary sciences, and is pursuing a career in hospitality may apply for a scholarship award ranging from $500 to $2500. Non-Hospitality Scholarship awards may be made to member’s employees or their children, or children of member innkeepers. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee. Awards are made based on scholarship merit, employment history, financial need, extra curricular activities and desire to work in hospitality.
