10 Maine Students to Receive Scolarships MEIA Tees & Textbooks

For Immediate Release Press Contact information: Rauni Kew 207-602-8500 kewr@glance.net Greg Dugal, Executive Director Maine Innkeepers Association (207) 865-6100 Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation Announces 2011 Scholarship Awards To Be Presented at Annual Tees & Textbooks Event Freeport, ME – May 23, 2011 – Ten Maine students will receive hospitality scholarships from The Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association (MEIA) at the seventh annual Tees & Textbooks event June 20 and 21, 2011 at the Marriott Sable Oaks in South Portland, announced Greg Dugal, Executive Director at MEIA. Scholarships will be presented after a 5:30 PM cocktail dinner reception on June 20th, 2011. The 17th annual Maine Innkeepers Association Hospitality Golf classic will begin at 9:00AM at Sable Oaks Golf Course the next day. The scholarship program, begun in 1984, was designed to inspire Maine students pursuing hospitality careers and has awarded over $138,000 to 239 students. This year the following ten students will be presented with sponsored scholarships totally $8100: • Kathryn Hand, of Kennebunkport attending University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH. Charles Samelson Award ($1000), sponsored by Dirigo Stitching & Harry Samelson. • Jordan Handy, of Lewiston attending Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY. Ed Langlois Award ($500), sponsored by Sebasco Harbor Resort. • Belinda Place, of Morrill, attending Thomas College, Waterville. Women in Hospitality Award, ($2500) - sponsored by Nancy Gray of Harraseeket Inn, Maureen McQuade of Inn by the Sea, Kathryn Weare of Cliff House Spa & Resort, Jean Ginn Marvin of the Nonantum Resort, and Marian Burns of Mira Monte Inn & Suites. • Rachel Michaud, of Hampden attending Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, NY. Charlie Keegan Award ($600) - sponsored by The Turkish Towel Company. • Ryan Asalone, of Hampden, attending Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA. Jedediah Scott Award ($1000) – sponsored by Peter Daigle of Lafayette Hotels. • Samantha Southam, of Bethel, attending Boston University, Boston, MA. Dennis Johnston Award ($500)- sponsored by Colonial Surveying. • Timothy O’Neill, of Auburn, attending Southern Maine Community College, South Portland. John O’Keeffe Award ($500) sponsored by Fisherman’s Wharf. • Sierra Warner, of Northport, attending Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Harold Nelson & Irving Small Award ($500) sponsored by Nelson & Small, Inc. • Dylan Bouchard, of Greenville, attending University of Maine, Orono. Ed & Fay Carpenter Award ($500) sponsored by Friends & Family Members • Laura Brown, of West Poland, attending Husson University, Bangor. Larry Mahaney Award- ($ 500) sponsored by Grand Hotel, Waterville. “It is wonderful to see our industry committed to supporting these outstanding Maine students, even in challenging economic times, and we hope some will be inspired to take up careers in hospitality, “said Dugal. “Hospitality continues to offer strong career paths and a range of good job opportunities right here in Maine.” Scholarship presentations will be made at 7:30 PM, June 20th in the Casco Bay Ballroom after cocktails and dinner, sponsored by New England Coffee, Turner Barker Insurance and Daigle Commercial Properties. Entertainment by Mainely Improv will follow. Tickets are available for $55 per person and all proceeds benefit the Maine Innkeeper’s Association Education Foundation, a 501c3 charity. For more information, please call Julie Campbell at 207-865-6100 or julie@maineinns.com Scholarships are awarded after review by a selection committee who consider scholastic records, financial need, extracurricular activities and a desire to work in hospitality to Maine students enrolled at fully accredited schools with specialties in culinary arts or hotel administration. This includes hospitality schools in the State University System, private Universities or Colleges, and Maine Community College Systems. Non- hospitality awards may also be available to employees and their families or family members of innkeepers.
