Jordan Handy of Lewiston Receives MEIA Education Foundation Scholarship Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact information: Rauni Kew 207-602-8500 Greg Dugal, Executive Director Maine Innkeepers Association (207) 865-6100 Jordan Handy of Lewiston Awarded Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation Scholarship Freeport, ME – June 19, 2012 –Jordan Handy of Lewiston was awarded a scholarship by The Maine Innkeepers Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association (MEIA) at the eighth annual Tees & Textbooks event, at the Senator Inn and SPA in Augusta, on June 4th, , 2012, announced Greg Dugal, Executive Director at MEIA. Handy is a student at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park New York. He has culinary experience at the Green Ladle restaurant at Lewiston Regional Tech Center, as well as DaVinci’s restaurant in the Bates Mill complex. Handy is currently completing an 18 week externship with Chef Eric Walker at Sebasco Harbor Resort. Handy was awarded a scholarship for $500. named for Ed Langlois, a past executive Director of the Maine Innkeepers Association, and sponsored by Sebasco Harbor Resort. The Maine Innkeepers Education Foundation has awarded 249 Maine students with over $157,800 since the scholarship program began in 1984. The program was designed to inspire Maine students pursuing hospitality careers and this year 9 students were presented with scholarships totaling $8200. “We are delighted to continue to offer support to these fine Maine students,” stated Dugal. “Maine’s hospitality industry is vital for the state, offering a broad range of career paths. We hope to encourage many of these exceptional students to remain in Maine and work in the industry.” Scholarships are awarded after review by a selection committee who consider scholastic records, financial need, extracurricular activities and a desire to work in hospitality to Maine students enrolled at fully accredited schools with specialties in culinary arts or hotel administration. This includes hospitality schools in the State University System, private Universities or Colleges, and Maine Community College Systems. Non- hospitality awards may also be available to employees and their families or family members of innkeepers.
