Kathryn Asalone of Hampden Awarded MEIA Education Foundation Scholarship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact information: Rauni Kew 207-602-8500 Greg Dugal, Executive Director Maine Innkeepers Association (207) 865-6100 Kathryn Asalone of Hampden Awarded Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation Scholarship Freeport, ME – June 19, 2013 –Kathryn Asalone of Hampden was awarded a scholarship by The Maine Innkeepers Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association (MEIA) at the ninth annual Tees & Textbooks event, held at the Fireside Inn and Suites in Portland, on June 3rd 2013, announced Greg Dugal, Executive Director at MEIA. Kathryn Asalone is attending University of Maine at Orono. She comes from a hospitality background as her father is the General Manager of the Comfort Inn Ocean’s Edge in Belfast. Asalone and her brother grew up at the hotel and have both been employed there in a variety of positions. She is attending UMO to obtain a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Asalone received the Dennis Johnston Award ($500 Award) sponsored by Colonial Surveying from Jeanne Carpentier of Emerald Hospitality Associates. The Maine Innkeepers Education Foundation has awarded 260 Maine students with over $168,800 since the scholarship program began in 1984. The program was designed to inspire Maine students pursuing hospitality careers and this year 11 more students were presented with scholarships totaling $11,000. “The Maine Innkeepers Association is pleased to be able to continue to offer annual support to these great Maine students, “stated Dugal. “Hospitality is the economic driver for the state and creates good career opportunities in a number of areas. We hope that many of the recipients will be inspired to stay in Maine and pursue their careers here in the state.” Scholarships are awarded after review by a selection committee who consider scholastic records, financial need, extracurricular activities and a desire to work in hospitality to Maine students enrolled at fully accredited schools with specialties in culinary arts or hotel administration. This includes hospitality schools in the State University System, private Universities or Colleges, and Maine Community College Systems. Non- hospitality awards may also be available to employees and their families or family members of innkeepers. All contributions made by the sponsors are donations to the Maine Innkeepers Association Education Foundation and are tax deductible as the Foundation is a 501c3 organization.
