Her grandfather, Bob Liberty, built the Trade Winds Motor Inn from the ground up 50 years ago. He was followed into the business by his son and daughter, McKnight’s uncle and mother.
The Maine Innkeeper’s Education Foundation scholarship program began 10 years ago to offer partial support to students pursuing careers in hospitality. Over $180,000. has been awarded to 273 Maine students since 2004. This year twelve Maine students received sponsored scholarships totaling $12,000.
“It is wonderful that our membership has once again risen to the occasion and exceeded last year’s contributions to the Maine Innkeeper’s Education Foundation,” stated Dugal. “Our industry remains committed to offering support to Maine students, and we hope many of them will remain in Maine with careers in hospitality.”
Scholarships were awarded after review by a selection committee who considered scholastic records, financial need, extracurricular activities and a desire to work in hospitality to Maine students enrolled at fully accredited schools with specialties in culinary arts or hotel administration. This includes hospitality schools in the State University System, private Universities or Colleges, and Maine Community College Systems. Non- hospitality awards may also be available to employees and their families or family members of innkeepers. Maine Innkeeper’s Association Education Foundation is a 501c3 charity.
