Awards were given to 48 recipients in five categories. Ten of those winners were from Portland and South Portland. The following winners were announced as “Front Desk/Guest Service Employee of the Year”: Todd Emery, Best Western Merry Manor Inn, South Portland ~ Todd Emery has been with the Best Western Merry Manor Inn since 1992. He is known for volunteering to fill in for fellow employees, and has spent many summers working split shifts to accommodate bus tours with their luggage. He has also helped with housekeeping when needed. “Todd has and will do whatever is necessary to make our guests’ visit the best possible, and to keep them coming back to our hotel, and to Maine,” says Management, Best Western Merry Manor Inn. Thomas Fasulo, Portland Regency Hotel, Portland ~ Tom Fasulo has been with the Portland Regency Hotel for five years, and during that time has been an outstanding employee. Known for being reliable and dependable, Tom has been awarded the Employee of the Month in the past, and he received the 2003 Employee of the Year award. “Tom has exemplified what it means to be a great employee. He is dependable, hardworking, dedicated and does it all with a smile on his face. Even though Tom is rarely seen, his dedication and work ethic would be hard to replace,” exclaims Management, Portland Regency Hotel. Abby Flynn, Hilton Garden Inn Portland Downtown Waterfront, Portland ~ Abby Flynn is known for being prompt and cheerful, very well organized and enthusiastic about her job. Taking customer service above and beyond guests’ expectations, she sends thank you notes and “see you soon” cards to guests after they have returned home. “Abby makes each day fun and lively and the hours past like minutes. She thinks on her feet, and is the most responsible, reliable and well-rounded employee any hotel could have” boasts Management, Hilton Garden Inn. Zuzana Kasperova, Hilton Garden Inn Portland Airport, Portland ~ Zuzana Kasperova is a quick learner and has been described as “one of the most incredible front office agents…” Her ability to multi-task, work efficiently, and always supply ultimate service along with a “can do” attitude is unparalleled, and helped her quickly be promoted to Sales Assistant. “Zuzana always rises to the occasion and views challenges as an opportunity to grow and expand her knowledge base. In our opinion Zuzana has given Guest Service a new meaning- it truly means to her “Ultimate Guest Service!” exclaims Management, Hilton Garden Inn. Beth Selby, Holiday Inn By The Bay, Portland ~ Beth Selby is known at the Holiday Inn for always being available for extra duties, and she is willing and very able to train new employees. “Every guest, whether by phone or face-to-face, is treated to her warmth and enthusiasm,” says Management, Holiday Inn By The Bay. The following winners were announced as “Housekeeper / Roomkeeper Employee of the Year”: Balbina Arzu, Hilton Garden Inn Portland Downtown Waterfront, Portland ~ Balbina Arzu is an excellent housekeeper, who has an eye for detail. She is dependable and always arrives for work early and in full uniform with a smile. She also helps Spanish speaking employees communicate and helps with filling out new employee’s paperwork. “It is a pleasure to have Balbina here working with us. She is just one of those employees that we never have to worry about; she knows her job and performs it exceptionally well,” says Management, Hilton Garden Inn. Lori Heath, Best Western Merry Manor, South Portland ~ Lori Heath has been in Housekeeping since 1995. She not only prepares the cleanest room possible but also shows a real interest in the guests themselves. Heath takes her job seriously while at the same time having fun with those around her. She enjoys exploring new challenges-spending several weeks behind the front desk and also taking charge of our laundry for over a year. “She is an enthusiastic employee, creating a genuine sense of welcome and of being at home whenever she communicates with her guests,” says Management, Best Western Merry Manor. Cynthia Parker, Portland Regency Hotel, Portland ~ Cindy Parker has been with the Portland Regency Hotel since 1997. She has taken on many roles in the Housekeeping department and is often pulled in many directions. Handling it without a complaint and always with a smile on her face, Parker is always there to help out the managers, her peers, and guests. “During the past seven years Cindy has shown us what it means to be a dedicated and reliable employee. She has a perfect attendance record, and in the past has been awarded Employee of the Month several times,” boasts Management, Portland Regency Hotel. The following winners were announced as “Maintenance & Groundskeeping Employee of the Year”: Alexander Harris, Hilton Garden Inn Portland Downtown Waterfront, Portland ~ Alexander Harris not only provides excellent customer service to the guests, but he keeps the portico neat and presentable on his shift. “Alex has recently taken it upon himself to wash vehicles that have been attacked by seagulls or those that just need it in his downtime, thus continuing to provide our guests with ultimate customer service above and beyond the call of duty,” says Management, Hilton Garden Inn. Wayne Reynolds, Best Western Merry Manor Inn, South Portland ~ Wayne Reynolds started working at the Best Western Merry Manor Inn in June of 1996, in housekeeping. He then transferred to laundry, and now can be found in all facets of maintenance. His eager enthusiasm started before he started working at the Inn – when he filled out his application for employment, he did not just fill in the blanks, hand it in and leave and wait. He called back, called back, called back, called back to find out when they would we hire him. “That eager enthusiasm came with him and continues to be a real part of Wayne and everything he accepts and initiates. If something needs to be done, ask Wayne, and it will be accomplished-beyond your expectation,” says Management, Best Western Merry Manor. This is the second time that the Maine Innkeepers Association has hosted the Stars of the Industry Awards, and it had enormous response, with all types of lodging members - B&Bs, hotels, inns, motels and resorts - responding with nominations. There were 48 Stars of the Industry being honored, each best representing the quality, service and spirit of hospitality, and demonstrating exemplary professionalism, exceptional service, outstanding personal performance and commitment to their property and guests. In addition to the keepsake awards program, each employee received a special Star of the Industry t-shirt, a certificate of recognition and a unique laser engraved Star of the Industry Maine-made award. “It is wonderful to be able to honor those people who are behind the scenes in our industry – they are really what make hospitality tick in Maine.” said Greg Dugal, Executive Director, Maine Innkeepers Association. “Their dedication, loyalty, and kindness all add to their professionalism, and make us proud to be an association that represents them,” he continued.
